Poetry Competition

The Art and Energy Collective invites you to submit your poetry to this new poetry competition! (and we have extended the deadline to 31st March 2021)

In the run up to COP26, Art and Energy are inviting people to respond creatively through a project called Moths to a Flame.

This poetry competition will be around the theme of ‘Moths, and/or Energy’.  We have several great entries which we will hold safe into next year…  keep them coming.

Shortlisted poets will be invited to read their poems in an online poetry slam in May 2021 and hosted by the wonderful Matt Harvey, where the online audience will be able to vote for their favorite poem.

The Art and Energy Poetry competition for 2021 is open for entries

This year, the theme for the competition is Moths and/or Energy.

Prize:

  1. 10 shortlisted entries will receive a mega moth kit which is part of the Moths to a Flame project plus a moth identification book.
  2. Each of the shortlisted entries will receive 3 hard copies of the resulting published book.
  3. The winner as decided by voters at a Zoom poetry slam online will receive £250

Rules: General

  1. All online entries must be received by midnight BST on the 31st March 2021.
  2. Late online entries will not be accepted under any circumstances.
  3. All postal entries must be post-dated on or before the 31st March 2021.
  4. Individuals may enter 1 poem.
  5. You cannot enter a poem written by more than one author. 
  6. The poem must be able to be read or performed for a maximum length of 2 minutes.
  7.  The competition is free to enter and poems can be of any length but must be on the theme outlined above.
  8. Your work is accepted on the basis that this will be its first publication anywhere in the world. This includes: anthologies, magazines, solo collections, school prints, on any website, including blogs, online magazines.
  9. Poems must be the original work of the author (We’re trusting you!).
  10. Entries must be written in English, but you can include phrases in your mother tongue or another language. If you would like to enter an entry in British Sign Language or Braille then please contact hello@artandenergy.org.
  11. Entries will be accepted from anywhere in the world.
  12. Competition entries cannot be returned under any circumstances. Please make sure you take note of the poem entered and send a copy only.
  13. Entries are to be submitted by email to hello@artandenergy.org with the subject heading MtaF Poetry Competition. Or by post to The Art and Energy Collective, Kaleider Studios, 45 Preston Street, Exeter, Devon, EX1 1DF, UK
  14. Each submission should include: The poem, Your name and contact details, confirmation that you will be happy to participate in the online poetry slam in May.
  15. By entering this competition, entrants agree that their poems and data may be used by The Art and Energy Collective, including for research purposes. By entering this competition you are agreeing that your anonymised data and poems can be used in such research.
  16. If you are under 16 your parent or guardian will need to a parent or guardian to give permission for you to enter. Without this permission we are not allowed to keep information about you, such as your contact details. If you are under 16, let us know when you make your submission and we will send you a permission form for your parent or guardian to complete.
  17. Shortlisting will take place in early April 2021 and the judges’ decision about who will be short-listed is final, and no correspondence will be entered into concerning this decision.
  18. Finalists will be invited to read their poem in a Zoom poetry slam in May where attendees to the slam will determine who is the winner.
  19. Late postal entries will not be accepted under any circumstances. 
  20. Due to the large number of entrants we are unable to respond individually to submissions.
  21. No acknowledgment of receipt can be made for postal entries unless a stamped, self-addressed envelope is included with the entry.

Rules: shortlist

  1. All 10 shortlisted poets will be notified in late April and invited to participate in the Zoom poetry slam in May 2021. All winners will be required to provide a biography and photograph at least 1 week prior to the slam.
  2. All shortlisted poems will be included in a small illustrated publication that The Art and Energy Collective will publish to raise funds for the Moths to a Flame project.
  3. Details of the shortlist will be announced publicly on our website in May 2021.
  4. The copyright of each poem remains with the author. However, authors of the winning poems, by entering the competition, grant The Art and Energy Collective the right to publish and/or broadcast their poem. If you allow your winning poem to be published after the winners’ announcement in May 2021 you agree to acknowledge The Art and Energy Collective by using the words “First published by The Art and Energy Collective for the Moths to a Flame project in 2021″.
  5. Authors of the winning poems will grant The Art and Energy Collective irrevocable, non-exclusive licence to republish the work in perpetuity, including (but not limited to):
    1. publishing the work online, including The Art and Energy website. The Art and Energy Collective will notify the writer if a third party requests permission to use their work in anyway.
    2. production of reprints
    3. publication (in print or online) of the work as part of an anthology or as an educational resource

All the rights mentioned above cover distribution or publication anywhere in the world.
