3 words for Green Spaces

In the Spring, Art and Energy worked in collaboration with residents in Pinhoe to gather information about the impact of nature on the community.

Pinhoe is an area of Exeter which has changed significantly over the last few years, with large new housing estates, turning a village into part of a city for many.

Three words were gathered from people’s experience of green space, the words highlighted the difference nature made to their lives. The words were written on leaves and placed on a map. Textile leaves were also made of favourite trees. Conversations about favourite walking routes were held and plenty of cake and tea made the talking drift and deepen.

Then, with the textile arts, community development and wellbeing expertise of Significant Seams CIC, we created a banner for the local community to hold up high.

Catherine West wrote an article about the experience of making leaves with meaning at the Pinhoe 3 words event.

Handling and making with different materials enriched the information gathered. We were all reminded how important it is to hold on to the heart of the community and its relationship with energy in natural places all around us.

Naomi Wright (Art and Energy) and Catherine West (Significant Seams) hold up the quilted banner, putting together all the walking routes and words of natural meaning.
