Biomimicry workshop with Millbay Academy

Art and Energy really enjoyed spending the day with students from Plymouth’s Millbay Academy delivering a biomimicry workshop with our friend and Board Member Dr Katie Shanks from University of Exeter Environment and Sustainability Institute. The workshop took place during The Mossy Carpet residency and exhibition at Theatre Royal Plymouth.

Learning from and then emulating nature’s forms, processes, and ecosystems to create more sustainable designs.
— Biomimicry definition

Millbay Academy students got hands-on with mosses, using magnifiers and hand lenses to look more closely at a range of bryophyte species. They then used a range of mediums to sketch and draw the details of the mosses they observed.

Next the students used a range of repurposed wools and yarns to create moss inspired woolly pompoms to add to The Mossy Carpet. Finally, they were able to record their own tiny actions for a brighter greener future using our special Tardigrade Telephone.
