The Mossy Carpet FAQs

  • The Mossy Carpet is an artwork inspired by moss and made by many people! Thousands of individually made pom-poms and textile tufts adorn fleecy felt from Dartmoor, creating a vibrant beautiful mossy carpet.

Each moss-like pompom celebrates someone’s small attempt to make the world better for all of life.

Within the artwork, we’ve created electronic sensors and stuffed textile tardigrades that play recordings of participant’s voices, so as you stroke the artwork, you hear about the things that other people are doing.

You are invited to help us make this epic new moss-inspired artwork. Let’s celebrate and honour everyone’s steps towards a better world!

  • Carbon looms large, it is the giant of our times. On our own, we can feel powerless, but when we work together we can Bury the Giant! We want this artwork to give people inspiration, comfort and hope.

Creative activities help us to slow down, have better conversations, imagine new things, have fun and feel more connected.

So far we’ve learnt so much on our journey exploring mosses, we know there’s even more to find out. We encourage you to start by looking closely at real mosses for inspiration as you join us in making this epic artwork.

  • To date, over 7,000 people have helped to make 20 metres of The Mossy Carpet. We hope to get tens of thousands more people involved, sharing what they do, learning what works, making connections, replicating the best ways forward. We are heading for more than 50 metres of carpet by June 2024, and 100 metres in time for an installation at an iconic venue to coincide with COP30 (the United Nations climate conference) in November 2025. We’ll be adding more milestones as the project grows and evolves.

  • Everyone! We want individuals, families, schools and community groups to get involved - all ages, backgrounds and from all over the U.K and even further afield. There are many ways to join in, pick from the menu above to find out more.

We hope this artwork will be inspiring, comforting, hopeful, fabulous and friendly, showing that together, we can make something magnificent.
