For four enchanting evenings, the Dazzle Festival illuminated Devonport in Plymouth, and Art and Energy was there to join in!

We installed our interactive solar-powered illumination artwork, ‘We are All Connected,’ at Devonport Market Hall.

It was great to witness the joy of visitors playfully joining in, connecting with one another to activate the artwork. From families holding hands to couples kissing, friends testing to see if they could set it off with just a finger-tip touch (yes they could!), and strangers reaching out to one another to form a connection. For many it was the closest they’d ever been to a domestic-size solar panel, sparking comments and questions about how they work, renewable energy developments and the future of our energy systems.

Many visitors went on to peer around the back, curious about how it worked… was all that power really travelling through them? Nope, it’s all safe via a flashing micro-controller and relays, but yes, their connection was what activated and empowered the illumination. We can achieve so much more when we work together!

Organisers Real Ideas Organisation estimate 20,000 visitors across the 4 days, fortunately we’d had the foresight to charge up spare batteries as the solar obviously wasn’t generating inside and we couldn’t have anticipated being quite so popular and busy throughout. We even had visitors making return visits to show their friends and family the artwork.

The festival marked 200 years of Devonport's history, shining a light on its past, present, and future. We certainly had amazing conversations about the past, present and future of energy systems.
