Home Sweet Home with the Pelicans

Chloe and Naomi from Art and Energy have been making friends with a community group in Exeter known as the Pelicans. Thanks to funding from Devon Communities Together, Chloe and Naomi have been busy running creative workshops from our new studio space at Positive Light Projects on Sidwell Street in Exeter.

One of our Home Sweet Home solar night light workshops was in partnership with the Pelicans and it was such a pleasure to meet them and get to know them all.

Who are the Pelicans? The Pelican Project is a group of young people with learning-disabilities from across Devon, they are at the centre of a collective that includes community organisations, teachers, creators, students, carers and families. The Pelicans aim to help each other thrive, to make a positive impact on our communities and to make sure the learning-disabled community belongs.

Back in December 2022, the Pelicans joined us for the morning at Positive Light Projects and designed, built and decorated their very own solar house night lights. Each kit contains a plywood house and solar light, once constructed, the house can be painted and decorated using a wide range of materials including magazines, newspapers, material offcuts and other recycled items.

The Pelicans were able to decorate both the inside and outside of their house reflecting their own imagination and personalities. During the day the solar panel charges the light which then at night illuminates the inside of the house showing off the various creative designs!

Thanks to all the Pelicans for joining us, we’d love to work with you again soon!

A huge thanks to Devon Communities Together for enabling these sessions to take place by supporting Art and Energy, The Pelican Project and Positive Light Projects with their funding.
